Slingsby Partners presents at the University of Bath Law Society

Slingsby Partners is proud to have sponsored the University of Bath Law Society for the last two years. We have now run three events with the society. This most recent presentation provided an insight into intellectual property (IP) law, and the career options within the industry.

David King, Ollie Stocks and Verity Andrew presented to over 50 students, as well as further students watching online, from the University of Bath Law Society at the Bath campus. The aim of the presentation was to introduce the students to possible careers in IP law, and in particular a career as a patent attorney. The patent attorney profession is often not well known or understood, and so we hope that giving this type of presentation will open up the profession to a wider, and more diverse, pool of applicants. The University of Bath does not offer a law degree, and so the patent attorney profession may be almost unheard of to Bath students. As such, the University of Bath Law Society seemed the perfect place to start.

This presentation covered the different types of IP law and how they may be applied to a product. This allowed the students to interact as they considered applying the types of IP law to the parts of a racing car. This was followed by a more detailed look into the specifics of, and benefits of having, patents.

The presentation also provided the students with a summary of possible career options within the IP law industry, with a particular focus on those which could utilise a STEM degree. Over 90% of the students in attendance were studying towards a STEM degree, and so hopefully this presentation opened up a number of options for them. To finish, the presentation outlined the role of a patent attorney, and gave ‘hints and tips’ for applying for a trainee patent attorney position.

We look forward to returning to Bath in the new year to give a more detailed presentation on specific aspects of patents, while also talking part in a networking event with the society and other law firms.

If you are interested in applying for a trainee patent attorney position at Slingsby Partners, please do send a CV and cover letter to [email protected].
