Slingsby Partners engages with design and engineering students at Middlesex University

Slingsby Partners is delighted to have been involved for the second year running in providing pro-bono information and advice for up-and-coming designers and engineers at Middlesex University in relation to intellectual property.

Philip, Anna and Verity at Slingsby Partners participated in the guest lecture series given by the Department of Design Engineering and Maths at Middlesex University. The aim of the lecture was to give a high-level explanation of all types of intellectual property, whilst focussing in on the various types of protection that could be most relevant to the students. In particular, their lecture explained the differences between designs and patents, how to obtain design protection and the costs involved, and how to search for existing patents and designs. The lecture ended with an in-depth Q&A session where the students were able to ask specific questions relating to their own projects and how best to get protection for them.

In addition to the guest lecture, Philip, Anna and Verity held a workshop with a small group of final year design and engineering students to discuss each students’ final year project individually and advise on how best to protect different aspects of their projects. The workshop was a great opportunity for the students to get personal advice, whilst we at Slingsby Partners really enjoyed seeing and discussing the students’ brilliant and innovative projects.

We hope to participate again in next year’s guest lecture series and look forward to exploring new ways of engaging with the design and engineering students at Middlesex University.

Some of the feedback from the students:

The Q&A was brilliant. I had a few thoughts and questions for my Final Major Project which was really helpful and will help in considerations of IP and product development.”

“I attended this talk last year, so it was a nice refresher. The question and answer section was very informative and interesting. Philip, Anna and Verity demonstrated their expertise with clear and detailed answers.”

“Thanks to Anna, Verity and Philip who delivered a really good presentation and talk on Intellectual Property for Designers. It was comprehensive with case studies contextualising the talk, giving a good understanding of the topics with real life examples and case studies.”
